The Fynbos and Beyond Foundation NPC
ABOUT US
Fynbos and Beyond Foundation NPC is a South African non-profit organisation dedicated to connecting people with the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom and inspiring practical action to protect it.
Our work brings together conservation, environmental education, eco-tourism, biodiversity storytelling, community engagement and nature-based experiences to help people discover the value of the natural world - and understand their role in protecting it.
The Cape Floral Kingdom is one of the world's six floral kingdoms and is exceptionally rich in plant diversity and endemism. It is noted that the region contains thousands of plant species, with a large proportion found nowhere else on Earth.
We believe conservation becomes stronger when people don't simply hear about nature - when they experience it, understand it and become personally connected to it.
Beyond The Fynbos
Fynbos is far more than a collection of beautiful plants. It is part of a remarkable living system of mountains, wetlands, rivers, coastline, wildlife, insects, birds, people and communities. The Cape Floral Region is internationally recognised for its exceptional biodiversity. It is also under pressure from factors including habitat transformation, invasive alien species, urban development, changing fire regimes and other environmental pressures. Fynbos & Beyond was founded on the 14 May 2026, from a simple idea:
The more people learn about nature, the more they connect with it. The more they connect with it, the more likely they are to protect it.
Our goal is therefore not only to conserve biodiversity, but to build a community of people who care enough to become active conservation heroes.
Our Approach
Fynbos & Beyond is built around a simple model that turns awareness into action:
Learn → people understand nature.
Connect → people find their place in conservation.
Conserve → people take action to protect it.
Repeated over time, this creates a cycle: Education → Awareness → Connection → Participation → Stewardship → Conservation. It is the framework behind everything Fynbos & Beyond does, and behind how we report our impact to funders and partners.
Our Vision
A generation of environmental custodians actively connected to and protecting the natural world.
Our Mission
To educate, connect and mobilise people to become active stewards of biodiversity.
Our Mandate
Fynbos and Beyond Foundation exists to inspire and equip the next generation of environmental custodians by connecting people with nature, environmental knowledge and meaningful opportunities to participate in conservation. Through education, partnerships and practical conservation action, we seek to foster a culture of stewardship and contribute to the protection and restoration of South Africa's biodiversity.
The Ecosystem We Work In
Fynbos & Beyond's role is to help young people and the public discover, understand, connect with, and ultimately help protect, this gradient of ecosystems - one of the most biodiverse and most threatened floral kingdoms on Earth.
From mountain to ocean. From classroom to field. From knowledge to action.
The Cape Floristic Region gives South Africa an extraordinary natural classroom on its doorstep - a single, connected gradient of ecosystems running from the mountains to the sea:
- Mountain Fynbos
- Lowland & Cape Flats Fynbos
- Sand Fynbos & Strandveld
- Renosterveld
- Wetlands & Rivers
- Coastal & Marine Ecosystems
